This Is A Pyramid Scheme

At its inception, “On The Road With Dave” devoted more than 50% of its content to “Multi-Level Marketing” and companies like Amway. At that time, I was running my very own Amway/Quixtar  distributorship at home and online using early web communities. This focus led to a variety of readers debating the pro’s and con’s of that industry. The blog was visited by those who despised that business model and those that would defend it with their last dying breath, even if their argument was totally wrong and without any substance.

Which is why I don’t understand why I let this blog entry sit in “draft” mode since December of 2016. I’m not sure why I never published it, other than after the 2016 Election season, I was not feeling “it” at the time.

So, like the “good ole days”,  but with a 2018 Internet twist, we once again visit Multilevel Marketing; courtesy of the HBO show,  “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.”

This episode originally aired in November of 2016 and I djohn-oliver-hboid go back and try to find discussion of the expose’ when the video first aired, but did not find much on the old websites dealing with the Great Multilevel Marketing Debate.  Admittedly, I am out of the loop in those circles these days and maybe it caused nary a ripple in the Interwebs water.  Maybe a few old readers of this blog will show up and give their opinion.

John Oliver does manage to find new ground, new companies, and new scandals  to discuss regarding MLM companies; other than the “Amway” subject covered so extensively back in this blog’s early days.

He targets Vemma and Herbalife among others, with only a casual mention of the Amway Corporation.  This should please and/or incite the old  “On The Road With Dave” crowd.

Above all, it’s funny.  And also a little sad, that many of these new companies are practicing and teaching exactly what their older siblings did in the 1990s and 2000s.  Practices that led to legal troubles, bankruptcy, and general ill-will towards the Direct Sales industry.  No longer do people have to go in search of obscure websites and blogs to learn about companies.  Instant opinion and facts are available in the time it takes to load up your Facebook page or Twitter feed.  Exposé videos litter YouTube in the 1000s.

So, watch this video and have a laugh and remember the good old days at OTRWD and how we stayed up all hours of the night; reading, writing, complaining, and yelling at the computer screen at somebody’s comment.

John Oliver may have the makings of a MLM “Extra Shiny Gemstone with Platinum Rings” leader/speaker selling the Anti-MLM cure.  Somebody may want to start a blog to put an end to this.

So, share this with 5 of your friends and get them to share with 5 of their friends and remember what John says, Don’t forget to hashtag; #ThisIsAPyramidScheme
