The 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 takes place tomorrow, May 3oth, 2016. In light of the historic race, I watched several highlight videos tonight and came across a recording of the 1967 Indy 500 presented on ABC’s Wide World of Sports hosted by Jim McKay, of course brought to you in COLOR for your colored television set.
A great race, with an upset win by A.J. Foyt after the race leader, and presumed winner, Parnelli Jones developed engine trouble–3 laps before the finish of the race. The last lap has some more excitement before the big win.
This is your Saturday Diversion before the big race tomorrow. It’s a great look into the past and sports coverage on TV in the 1960s. Pay attention and tell me if the skidding sounds are faked. It sounds like ABC “played” with the crashes and “re-dubbed” the sound for television effect.
Enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend!
