2006: On The Road With Dave

2006 has but a few hours left; and what would an end-of-the-year blog post be without a Year in Review.

A Year in Review? That's preposterous! That's so unoriginal! That's "hack" blogging at it's innate worst.

With that said...

On The Road With Dave's 2006 Selected Blog Posts

JANUARY

One of my most Googled articles was about

Free Samples

FEBRUARY

Do you bash other MLMs to promote your own?

My Dad Is Bigger

MARCH

During March 2006 I wrote about Amway Operations in Europe. A sample of that series was:

Amivo: Your Online Opportunity From Amway

APRIL

In April the Alticor Media Blog came out fighting in a blog entry "Alticor Media Blog Fighting Back". The Alticor Blog covered many topics in the following months regarding the Dick DeVos bid for the governorship of Michigan.

MAY

May marked the introduction of "D. Robison, PR Guy". An exercise in silliness that many readers enjoyed. You can access the entire story plus a sequel in the
May Archives.

JUNE

Shhhhhhhhh...in June, Dave became a granpa. Remember just call me Dave.

JULY

The Federal Trade Commission asked for comments on their Proposed Business Opportunity Rule. I responded to the FTC request.

AUGUST

August bears mentioning a few entries.

QUIXTAR turned heads when they announced a new advertising campaign, which included television commercials.

More importantly, The Imperial Palace Casino turned my stomach in August.

Some readers were disappointed in me because I decided not to quit Quixtar, as I had promised one year earlier, if I had not reached the Platinum Leadership level. I semi-apologize for going back on that promise in "Plight of The Reluctant Quitter".

Finally, I am "forced" to become a contributing writer for The Quixtar Blog.

SEPTEMBER

Quixtar unveils a new look for their Quixtar Facts website. I give my opinions to the new site.

OCTOBER

October was a sad month and filled with stress and drama as the Robison family suffered a house fire.

NOVEMBER

I thought Quixtar critics were ruthless, but I hadn't heard about Mary Kay Critics; until I wrote about "Mary Kay: Hatin' On The Pink"

A new world opened up for me when I discovered MySpace and you can still visit Dave's Space and sign up to be my official MySpace friend.

DECEMBER

Some Quixtar Independent Business Owners follow the rules and others try to sell Quixtar products on Amazon. I advocate following the rules.

So, what will happen in 2007?

Stop by "On The Road With Dave" everyday in the coming year and find out.

"Sunday Thoughts"

"New Year's eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights."

"On The Road With Dave" Makes The Z-List.

Kathy Griffin is proud of being on the "D-List".

So, I should be proud of making the "Z-List".

If you are a participant of Seth Godin's Squidoo site, then you'll know that Seth has a Z-List of Blogs Worth A Look.

I found out today that my good friend Jerry Giebeig nominated
"On The Road With Dave", to the list.

Thanks To Jerry!

If you are a participant of Squidoo, stop by the List and give me a nudge. I was at #16 earlier.

Yeah, it's a shameful plug and yeah, I'm an egomaniac; but you should have figured that out by now.

Merry Christmas 2006

"And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more."

"Sunday Thoughts"

"But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

MLM Liberal Scheduled For Deletion

Back in March of 2006, Sean Gilbow started the MLM Liberal.

"OUT to change the network marketing industry, especially its role in the political process. Read up on how one gay union member at Ground Zero in the 2004 Presidential election is determined to OUT AMWAY'S SUPPORT OF THE BUSH BACKERS RUNNING FOR OFFICE IN 2006. And by buying from his business, you help support progressive causes."

Sean's blog entries were prolific, detailed, political rants against the Bush Administration during the height of the 2006 Election season. Very little was ever mentioned about Multi-level Marketing except for a few entries at the blog's inception about Sean's MLM companies he was involved in.

The MLM Liberal's "hook" was that almost every entry began with a tabloid-type headline referencing Amway's and Quixtar's Founders political contributions to the Republican Party. Some days, the entries were more than a stretch to make the Amway connection to the current day's news.

Being a Liberal myself, I read the MLM Liberal pretty regularly just to see what was being reported. But I never could really get past the "hook". It seemed to defeat the MLM Liberal's message.

It's kinda like when I listen to Rush Limbaugh. I really try to see the point Rush is trying to make and I want to understand the "other side"; but I always have trouble getting past Rush's little "labels" he puts on things like when he says "drive-by media" over and over again or "femi-nazi" It just rubs me the wrong way.

But saying all this, I am disappointed with the MLM Liberal's current announcement.

Sean has completed his 500th blog entry and is switching to a new website and blog focus. But he is DELETING MLM Liberal.

"As for this blog, it will be deleted on December 31. Such will also be the case for the SFI Marketer's blog, which will be moved to a new location affiliated with my business, CleanLeft.com.

It is recommended that you bookmark the various blog and website links posted here to get your fill of the type of material that has been posted here. Most of these sites have been around a lot longer, and they are generally a lot more entertaining."

WHY?

Why does the entire blog have to be deleted? Blogger.com hosts blogs for free indefinitely.

The content of the blog still makes Sean's points and expresses his views.

Whether I, or anyone else, agrees with it or not; it should not be deleted.

Why waste all that effort of cutting and pasting articles and writing original commentary?

Sean. Might I offer a bit of advice and encouragement?

(1)Why don't you write ONE MORE entry and used that as a "gateway" to your other new sites. Welcome those readers who stumble upon the blog and give them a list of the links to your new sites and the expected content?

(2) If you continue a political blog in another format; keep it separate from MLM;

(3) If you write about the MLM Industry and your current affiliated MLM companies; make a blog strictly for that. (You can still criticize Quixtar and Amway for any faults you perceive from an MLM angle)

Finally, DON'T DELETE MLM LIBERAL. Stand by it.

Outside "Inside Quixtar" Looking In

On Monday, July 12, 2004:

Welcome to Inside Quixtar, a peek inside the walls of Quixtar Inc.

Inside Quixtar today the indoor temperature is about 70 degrees. Outside temp is 79 degrees and it's cloudy but there's no chance of rain.

Today's menu at Quixtar's cafeteria features spaghetti with meat sauce, carved roast pork, and today's soup is stuffed baked potato. I'm having an XS Energy Bar for lunch.

That was Beth Dornan's first blog entry. Back then she was known merely as "Bobble."

Beth is Director of Communications for Quixtar, Inc.

Back then, we really didn't have a clue as to who Beth was; except she had a unusual preoccupation with the Lunch Menu at the Quixtar cafeteria. She also gave us inside information on the weather in Grand Rapids.

But, we grew to like Beth and her observations; her encounters with fellow employees; and small peeks into her personal life. She seemed to be truly making an effort. She even answered her comments section.

Of course, Quixtar had several employee bloggers at about the same time. Some were better than others, but Beth hung in there.

In the past 6 months, she has been providing some true insight into the Public Relations department at Quixtar and she has taken on the task of answering tough questions and tackling topics that are controversial in the Quixtar world.

And now, Beth has "graduated" from her old homestead, and has a new domain.

Beth is now blogging at http://insidequixtar.opportunityzone.com/

The site looks good, and the Opportunity Zone domain and format will be home to other corporate Quixtar blogs such as The Real Quixtar Blog; (even though it appears that RQB is keeping it's dot com address.)

From Bobble to Beth; from carved roast beef to carving out her own niche; it looks like Beth has found her focus.

"Not to rehash ancient history, but as many of you know, I started blogging using a pseudonym and talking about all kinds of stuff. Then, I was outed and started talking more about what we do in Communications, as well as providing some context and explanation to corporate announcements, decisions and happenings. So that’s where I’m going to focus. I’m going to give you the backstory behind some decisions and announcements and share information or insights you may not see elsewhere. If I’m not adding to the conversation, I’m adding to the noise."

Congrats Beth!

But, can I still call ya Bobble?

Hey You! Person Of The Year!

Back in the day; it was around 1979, I came up with a bunch of goals. It was almost high school graduation time and I had big "high school" dreams. To be rich, to not get married until I was 40, to drive a Lamborghini, and...AND...to be

"Time: Man of The Year".

The date I set for that last goal was 1997 or 1999; I can't remember which; but you get the idea, I wanted it to be waaaay in the future. I found out today, that I, along with every other Internet user in the world, achieved that lofty goal. (I was just about 9 years off on the date)

But, I'm happy nonetheless, not because I think this is as close as I will come to appearing on the cover of Time Magazine; but because I feel like I contributed to this decision by the newsmagazine.

"It's a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It's about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people's network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It's about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes.

The tool that makes this possible is the World Wide Web. Not the Web that Tim Berners-Lee hacked together (15 years ago, according to Wikipedia) as a way for scientists to share research. It's not even the overhyped dotcom Web of the late 1990s. The new Web is a very different thing. It's a tool for bringing together the small contributions of millions of people and making them matter. Silicon Valley consultants call it Web 2.0, as if it were a new version of some old software. But it's really a revolution."

If you read the entire article; and you contributed to a blog in 2006, watched a YouTube video and emailed it to a friend or get excited that you now have 125 friends on MySpace; you just might feel a little proud.

BUT!

You may not be as proud as Shawn Cannon.

I think Shawn holds the title of first of the "community reporters" to give his acceptance speech for the title of Person of The Year. Throughout the day, there have been others who jumped on the "acceptance speech" bandwagon; but since this is the first one I saw this morning; Shawn wins the Originality Award as well as his coveted Person of The Year award.

Congrats Shawn!

"Sunday Thoughts"

"I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys."

Amanda Chapel: PR Strumpette

My educational background is Public Relations. I have set on the boards of both local and regional Public Relations organizations. My clients have included individuals and major corporations: and so when I do my little
"D. Robison; PR Guy" episodes, I speak with a little experience.

But, I have found an incredible blog for all those interested in Public Relations and for those with just a passing interest in how Public Relations affects their business. (And, if you don't think it affects your business, think again)

Amanda Chapel is the former vice president in the Consumer Marketing Group at Weber Shandwick, one of the world's largest PR firms and she now writes, Strumpette, A Naked Journal of the PR Business.

Strumpette? I'll let Amanda explain:

"...and I end up alone in a bar (I hate that). Sure enough some 3-piece empty suit imagining me a gyro spit tries to make a pass. He barely acknowledges the introduction and goes straight for the "So, what I do for a living?" I assume he's quick in other ways, as well.

Anyway, it had been a long twelve-hour day of putting out client fires and teeth-gnashing internal politics. It's budget time at the "image factory." I was/am spent and just didn't have one ounce of posturing left in me for this guy. I hear myself blurt out, "I am a whore." It was a total knee-jerk reaction. I figure that's what he really wanted to hear. But truth is, I work for a major PR firm. I just didn't have it in me to gussy it up any. He instantly smiled, could barely contain his utter glee.

Well, the incident sent me into days of ruminating and gut-wrenching soul searching. Who am I? What makes my career even remotely meaningful? Sure, I've accumulated a killer portfolio, won a ton of awards in the last 15 years. But I've concluded that it's just not real and doesn't mean a damn thing. That was the moment when Strumpette was conceived.

What you'll find here is an honest treatment of the PR business. Why? Because there really isn't one...

...Here, imagine life as a game of poker. Of course, it's "best hand wins all;" but the object is to increase the pot. So everyone holds their cards close to the chest. We all bluff on what we've got. That's where PR comes in. I am, we are, the Strumpette in acrylic heels behind the fat man at the table, a billboard for his brash confidence, stroking his ego, attending to his every need. Don't let anyone kid you, that whore is every man's fantasy the animal that is business is male.

But then came the Internet. Now we all can virtually see through the bluff. The game is now Indian poker where everyone else can see your hand apparently except you. And the most absurd thing is to watch the posturing, puffing and bluster that continues.

Here we expose that. Strumpette is a totally naked journal of the PR Business. Watch as I work the pole. Care for another cocktail mister?"

Ms. Chapel, I'll be stage-side

Good Work Follows You

A few days ago, I get a call at work from my son. He tells me someone called at home looking for me and I needed to call them.

It turns out that the person who called was a client of mine over 6 years ago, when my wife and I was running our video production company.

The guy "Googled" me, found my location, looked up my number and called. He wanted me to travel to Tennessee and film a video for his corporation.

I told him that we were no longer in the video production company and assured him he could have probably found a reputable company in his area.

He told me that yes he could have, but he wanted to "start with the best" first.

Yep, my head expanded to twice its normal size.

But it's nice to know that when you do good work (in any profession), you have no idea how long of an impression that work will last. I'm lucky that mine lasted at least 6 years, and that it was an extremely good impression.

I would encourage anyone to ALWAYS do your best; it pays dividends down the road and comes back to you ten-fold.

I couldn't do the work for this old client, but I did re-connect with him and proved a lasting business relationship exists far past any existing business.

I Believe In Mississippi

Rick Looser owns and operates the Cirlot Agency, a Public Relations company in Jackson,MS. I met Rick several years ago while my wife and I were operating our video firm.

A few years ago Rick tells the story of being on a plane and questioned about where he lived. When he mentioned Mississippi, he was asked about the Ku Klux Klan. This sparked an idea in Rick that has resulted in a national campaign to change the perception people have about the Magnolia State.

I spent almost all my life in Mississippi and while I now live on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, I am more than happy to consider myself one of Rick Looser's unofficial ambassadors for this mission.

Dave

One Year After Public Service Campaign’s Release, New Posters
Added To Dismantle Negative Mississippi Stereotypes

Jackson, MS–-A public service campaign designed to directly combat the
negative stereotypes often associated with the state of Mississippi is being expanded with three new public service announcements in the form of print ads and posters.

The Mississippi, Believe It!™ campaign was designed to inform and educate the citizens of Mississippi, as well as the rest of the country, about the many positive attributes of Mississippi.

It now includes fourteen public service announcements created to run in both newspapers and magazines. Just as the Agency did a year ago, a full set of the Mississippi, Believe It!™ posters containing all 14 posters will be sent to every public and private K-12 school and every college and university in the state in the new year.

The campaign also includes a website that houses the posters in a downloadable format, as well as links to other sites which list little-known facts
about the state. The campaign features many of the wonderful people, aspects, stories and facts associated with the state of Mississippi. The Mississippi, Believe It!™ campaign was designed pro bono by The Cirlot Agency, a Mississippi-based, full-service, marketing, public relations and corporate communications firm, as a gift to Mississippi in an effort to thank the state for supporting its business over the past two decades.

The campaign was recently featured in The New York Times, U.S. News & World Report, and the International Herald Tribune.

According to Rick Looser, COO of The Cirlot Agency, the campaign has been
fueled just in the past few weeks with the negative comments about Mississippi by Rep. Charles Rangel of New York. "The three new ads were developed weeks before Rep. Rangel made his now infamous comments, but ignorant statements such as his demonstrate the need for a continuing effort such as Mississippi, Believe It!™," Looser said.

"We plan to send him one of the T-shirts from our new online store--I think the, "Yes, we can read. A few of us can even write.," T-shirt would be most appropriate," Looser added.

The campaign takes common Mississippi stereotypes and twists them to reveal
the truth about the state. For instance, the headline of one the newly added posters reads,

"Meet a few of our new good ole boys."

The ad explains that Mississippi has more black elected officials than any other state in the country. Women in high ranking positions are featured, as well as Chief Phillip Martin of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

In the other newly added posters, one features the success of Hartley Peavey
and Peavey Electronics. The ad’s headline reads, "A Mississippi stereo type." Peavey started his company in 1965 in his dad’s basement in Meridian, MS. Now, his operation stands at 1.5 million square feet and supplies many of today’s music stars with equipment, such as audio mixing consoles, amplifiers, microphones and guitars.

The third new PSA features the late Dr. Arthur Guyton, who is world-renowned for his physiology textbook, which he wrote in 1956 while at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

The headline says, "Mississippi. When it comes to modern medicine, we wrote the book." The ad explains that the Textbook of Medical Physiology has been used for decades in medical schools in the United States and abroad. The best-selling physiology book ever published, this textbook may be the best-selling medical textbook of any kind. Another UMC physician, Dr. John Hall, has carried on Dr. Guyton’s legacy by updating the textbook with new editions.

"Throughout the 189 years of Mississippi's statehood, untold numbers of the
state's citizens have made marvelous medical advances, entertained the masses, and invented products that do everything from make lives better to improve space travel," said Looser.

"That's just to name a few of the state's successes. But all too often, Mississippi is only thought of regarding a short period in her history in which civil rights atrocities took place. In many parts of the country, this is all Mississippi is known for and, unfortunately, this negative perception has greatly affected how Mississippi’s own citizens view their state."

Looser believes that until Mississippi’s own citizens are proud of its successes,
the rest of the country cannot be expected to change their perceptions about Mississippi.

The Cirlot Agency is asking that newspapers across the state again donate
space to help educate people and share positive information about Mississippi.
The ultimate goal is to create "citizen ambassadors" for the state.

A year ago, the Agency simply hoped that these "citizen ambassadors" would visit the website, www.mississippibelieveit.com, download the posters and email them from coast to coast. To date, through the website and emails, an estimated 20 million people have seen the posters, making Mississippi, Believe It!™ a success.

Another added feature to the website is an online store, where anyone can
purchase Mississippi, Believe It!™ merchandise. T-shirts, caps, and other gift
items are available for sale as a fundraiser for the campaign. "Our hope is that
the online store will be so successful that we will be able to buy advertising
space in national newspapers and magazines to further spread the word about Mississippi," concluded Looser.

All the proceeds from the store go toward expanding the campaign nationally, as well as covering expenses, such as packaging and postage. No one involved with the campaign will profit from the sale of any merchandise.

While visiting the website, users are encouraged to email other great
Mississippi success stories by clicking on "Know Another Great Mississippi Story?" section.

"We realize there is a plethora of great Mississippians and stories not featured
in the campaign," continued Looser. "So many, in fact, that it is next to
impossible to include them all. Isn't it a wonderful 'problem' not to have enough space to feature all of our extraordinary stories?"

The cost of the Mississippi, Believe It!™ campaign is estimated at over
$315,000 to date. The Cirlot Agency has donated over $275,000 in time and resources to bring this campaign to fruition. Service Printers, Inc., of Flowood, MS, donated over $40,000 in printing services and paper costs for the posters.

The Cirlot Agency, a Mississippi-based, full-service, marketing, public relations and corporate communications firm, represents accounts on a national and international basis ranging from Fortune 100 companies to some of the world's largest privately held corporations.

My Ears Are Burning And Turning Pink

The curiosity is killing me.

On The Road With Dave is getting some visits from a site called Pink Lighthouse, and it's discussion forum.

And all the visits are going straight to yesterday's entry about Faith In Mary Kay.

I think I'm being talked about; but the URL that I'm getting in my site statistics info seems to be a private thread.

What I don't understand is; if the visitors are gonna grace me with their company, the least they could do is leave me a comment and let me know what's being said about me. Is it good? Is It Bad? Am I a bastard MLMer gripped by a cult of brainwashed robots?

As always, they can leave the comment Anonymously, or Type in a name, or leave a comment under their Blogger account name, if one exists.

They could even email me some "cut and pastings" of the conversation at Pink Lighthouse.

I have one more entry in mind regarding the Pink Truth website and then I think I'll be through with it, but for now; welcome to all the new readers, even if it's only temporary.
